Hollywood
star Tom Cruise reportedly turned down the opportunity to receive a Kennedy
Center Lifetime Achievement Honor during a ceremony hosted by President Trump
in December. According to sources familiar with the matter at the arts
institution, Cruise declined the prestigious award due to "scheduling
conflicts," though neither he nor his representatives have publicly
confirmed the reason.
This year’s
honorees include industry icons such as Sylvester Stallone, KISS, Gloria
Gaynor, George Strait, and Michael Crawford. President Trump, who now serves as
Chairman of the Kennedy Center, personally selected most of the recipients and
confirmed he will host the gala.
The decision
follows a whirlwind of changes at the Kennedy Center earlier this year. The
President appointed new board members, dismissed many who had been named by the
prior administration, and removed the center’s long-standing president. These moves
triggered public criticism, with some artists—like Rhiannon Giddens, Renée
Fleming, and Shonda Rhimes—publicly withdrawing from events in protest.
Despite Tom Cruise’s absence from the honors list, his recognition by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences remains intact. He is scheduled to receive an honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards in November.
