At a recent
summit in Anchorage, President Vladimir Putin spoke in English during a part of
his meeting with President Donald Trump, according to the Kremlin. Officials
explained that he chose to use English to underscore the concept of
"equality between nations" and to create a more direct means of
communication.
Russian
deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed that a statement Putin delivered
in English was a deliberate nod to sovereignty and mutual respect. He
emphasized that the use of a common language was intended to demonstrate parity
rather than superiority.
The move has drawn attention on social media, where commentators noted the symbolic value of Putin choosing to address Trump, a native English speaker, in his own tongue. It wasn't interpreted as a power play, but rather as a gesture meant to bridge cultural differences and set a tone of equal footing.
