| Emma Thompson and Donald Trump |
At the
Locarno Film Festival, celebrated actress Emma Thompson shared a surprising
anecdote from 1998. On the very day her divorce from Kenneth Branagh became
official, she received a call from Donald Trump—who at the time was a
businessman, not yet president.
Answering
the call from her trailer on the set of *Primary Colors*, she initially thought
it was a prank. Trump introduced himself and invited her to stay at one of his
properties and have dinner. Thompson politely responded, “Well, that’s very
sweet. Thank you so much—I’ll get back to you.”
She then
realized that her divorce decree had just came through. With wit and humor, she
reflected that Trump likely had aides searching for “a nice divorcée” to date,
and that finding her number in her trailer “felt like stalking.”
Looking
back, Thompson joked that accepting the invitation could have been a monumental
moment:
“I could
have gone on a date with Donald Trump—and I’d have a story to tell. I could
have changed the course of American history.”
Instead, she
went on to marry Greg Wise in 2003, with whom she shares two children.
