With the
upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin
scheduled to take place in Alaska, questions are being raised about the
possibility of Putin being detained under an International Criminal Court (ICC)
warrant. Issued in March 2023, this warrant accuses him of war crimes related
to the forced deportation of children from Ukrainian territories.
Under the
Rome Statute, ICC member countries—125 in total—are legally required to arrest
individuals flagged by the court. This includes nations like the UK, Germany,
France, Australia, and many others. However, the United States, where the summit
is held, is not a signatory to the ICC. This means that despite the warrant,
Putin cannot be arrested on U.S. soil—creating a legal loophole that allows him
to travel to Alaska without fear of detention.
