In a candid
reflection, actor Michael Douglas revealed that his 2010 throat cancer
diagnosis was linked to human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus commonly
transmitted through oral sex. He described how the diagnosis came after months
of discomfort and medical confusion, culminating in a biopsy by a doctor in
Montreal who discovered a walnut-sized tumor at the base of his tongue. Douglas
vividly recalled the moment, quoting the doctor: “We need a biopsy.”
Later, he
jokingly referred to the act that likely caused the virus as sexual intimacy
“under the sheets.” His openness about the link between HPV and throat cancer
sparked broader conversation and increased awareness about the importance of
prevention, early detection, and the role of safe sexual practices in public
health.
